Bill Gates leaves the country on board a private plane

Bill Gates visits CanadaMicrosoft founder Bill Gates left the Philippines before 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Gates arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on April 4 with his family and they reportedly stayed at an exclusive resort in Palawan for days.

The billionaire also visited the International Rice Research Institute at the University of the Philippines in Los Banos.

His visit was apparently confidential as no official confirmation came as regards his visit in Palawan and in Laguna.

The Bureau of Immigration, nonetheless, said that a certain William Henry Gates arrived at the NAIA on April 4 aboard a private US jet.

It added that Gates flew aboard a chartered plane en route to Puerto Princesa in Palawan on April 5.

A photograph obtained by GMA News showed a helicopter owned by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation landed at the IRRI. The IRRI management, however, refused to confirm nor deny the visit of their largest benefactor.

Malacañang also fended off criticisms that it snubbed Gates, saying it was Gates’ foundation that withdrew its request for a courtesy call by the world’s richest man on President Benigno Aquino III.

During his visit to the country, police arrested Konstantin Simeonov Kavrakov, a Bulgarian national who allegedly hacked the account of Gates in 2011. —Rie Takumi/NB, GMA News
