round 8,000 jobs will be created with the development of a fruit plantation project in Palawan, according to Palawan Gov. Jose Chaves Alvarez.

Alvarez told reporters in a recent news conference that Del Monte-Arabia is investing a $250 million to develop a banana and pineapple plantation in Palawan that would cover at least 6,000 hectares of land.

He was referring to Del Monte-Arabia, which is a separate entity from Cagayan de Oro’s Del Monte Pacific Ltd. owned by the Campos group.

With the development of this fruit plantation, Alvarez said that Del Monte-Arabia aims to export produce from the province to North Asia and the Middle East.

He further said that upon meeting with Del Monte-Arabia’s top officials to see the province, they agreed that Palawan would be an ideal agricultural place to produce fresh pineapples and bananas for export.

A memorandum of understanding  on the project between the provincial government and Del Monte-Arabia is expected to be signed on July 28, Alvarez said.

Expected to sign the agreement are Del Monte-Arabia President Hani El-Naffy and Chairman Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh.
