US exec to visit Palawan for better partnership in fighting crime, securing borders

interphoto_1400037750PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — A mid-level official of the United States Department of State is scheduled to visit Palawan and tour the Philippine National Police-Special Boat Unit (PNP-SBU) Headquarters Thursday.

The visit of US Department of State Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) Carol Z. Perez of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) comes as the Philippines and the United States look to amend a Letter of Agreement granting the country additional funding support to enhance the institutional and operational capabilities of law enforcement.

It is also to support reform efforts aimed at helping the justice sector prevent, investigate, and prosecute crimes.

The US government is looking to provide nearly $ 18 million to support projects, such as the Global Security Contingency Fund-Philippines (GSCF-Philippines) program to enhance the government of the Philippine’s capability to enforce laws and maintain internal peace and security in the lands and seas of the southern part of the country, and the Southeast Asia Maritime Initiative project is designed to enhance maritime law enforcement capacities within the Philippine national maritime domain.
