Red tide alert up in Palawan, Davao Oriental, and parts of Visayas

Image result for red tide alertThe Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday issued an advisory saying a red tide alert is up over parts of Western Samar, Palawan, Masbate, Negros Oriental, Davao Oriental.

The BFAR said laboratory results conducted by BFAR and local government units showed that shellfish from the following areas were still positive for the paralytic shellfish poison above the regulatory limit:

  • Irong-Irong Bay, Catbalogan in Western Samar;
  • Inner Malampaya Sound in Taytay and Puerto Princesa Bay in Puerto Princesa City, in Palawan;
  • coastal waters of Mandaon and Placer in Masbate,
  • Tambobo Bay, Siaton in Negros Oriental; and
  • Balite Bay, Mati in Davao Oriental

 

Also found to have red tide toxin were:

  • Villareal and Maqueda Bays in Western Samar;
  • Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; and
  • coastal waters of Gigantes Islands, Carles in Iloilo

The BFAR said shellfish of all types and Acetes sp. or alamang from the above-mentioned areas are not safe for human consumption.

On the other hand, fish, squids, shrimps and crabs—if fresh and washed thoroughly and with internal organs removed—are safe to eat, BFAR said.
