At least 29 fishermen from Mindoro Occidental province were arrested off Palawan last weekend, the Philippine Coast Guard said Tuesday.
The Coast Guard said the 29 violated a town ordinance in Agutaya, Palawan that barred transients from fishing in the area.
Investigation showed the 29 were aboard the fishing banca “Edggie-6” about seven nautical miles northeast of Barangay Maracanao in Agutaya.
Found with the fishermen were compressors believed used for illegal fishing.
The arrested fishermen were brought to Agutaya Wharf where they were issued a Certificate of Orderly Inspection. According to the Coast Guard, the captain paid P58,705 in administrative fines.
The fishermen were cleared to leave Agutaya Wharf and go home to Caminawit in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.
