The local government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) held its first ICT Summit last Monday (5 December 2016).

According to the Philippine News Agency, Abdelnur Campong, Chief of ARMM governors ICT office, shared at the event that the region now has better ICT. Before 2011, there were no efforts in establishing ICT in the regional

government.

Today, all regional line agencies have their own websites and instituted database systems, even as the ARMM government created an ICT office through an executive order.

“We established systems at the office of the ARMM governor such as human resource information system, Electronic New Government Accounting System, Database, Radio-Frequency IDentification, and many other systems,” said Campong.  “Definitely, we now have brighter and better state of ICT in the region unlike before.”

Not wanting to rest on its laurels, ARMM held the ICT Summit to further educate its stakeholders on the trends and latest technologies that could enable more efficient delivery of their services. “Our focus here is to improve the services in the ARMM, particularly in the regional government,” said Campong.

The summit gathered industry stakeholders from the government and academe, as well as professionals and students to discuss the trends and challenges in the ICT sector of the region and the Philippines.

According to Campong, the summit focused more on data management and how it can be beneficial for the government. “It also dealt on topics how to establish our baseline data to be used in the present and future administrations for decision-making, and programme proposal drafting.”
